The question of faded inserts, dials,

The world is crazy in my opinion when people are out there looking for faded inserts for the Rolex GMT or Submariners. In the past, our aim as collector is to find vintage watches in pristine conditions. However, the trend now is to find used, or damaged dials and inserts. Some collector has resorted to sandpaper or using of chemical to bleach their bezel insert in order to give it as used look, which to me is totally crazy.

The real challenge is to find a vintage watch that look like brand new rather then to purposely aged the watch, dial or insert... Right?

Vintage Omega

I was walking around Bangkok this afternoon and there are not many vintage watches around. Found this solid gold Omega in reasonable condition but I have resisted in buying as I am trying to streamline and refine my collection,

During the past few months, I have branched out to the IWC collection and Military watches but I have since let go the IWC and focus on the vintage military and Rolexes. The only exception was the large Gubelin automatic Moonphase which is quite a rare find.

I am hoping to find a Rolex green sub 50th anniversary...

Seiko Earth watch

I do not usually collect Quartz watches but thinks an exception,

Rolex 16700 new bezel

I know there are many collectors who love to have the aged look for their vintage watches. For me, my preference is to have vintage watches in pristine condition. As such, I have chosen to replace the pinkish bezel with a brand new Pepsi bezel which make the whole watch looks in pristine conditions!

Benrus type 2 class A

I didn't expect to find another Benrus military but I did ... The watch is in in excellent condition making it hard to resist to keep a spare..

Rolex 16800 new bezel

Just received the Rolex 16800 back from SAB Bangkok service with a brand new bezel as the previous one was without the luminous pearl.

Initially I was thinking of finding a replacement from eBay or watch forum but in the end, getting from Rolex center is much cheaper then elsewhere. Even though the watch is a relatively newer one, as it has been discontinued, it joins the rank of vintage.

Happy weekend

Oyster Pioneer

After my secondment to Bangkok plus the hassle of packing and moving, I have promised myself not to buy another more watch unless I am able to sell one before I can one in in order to keep the number of watches under control. This afternoon, I was fortunate to be able to trade my IWC automatic date for this original dial with Arabic numerals , reflective minute track, red 24 hour military track, and blued steel hands, Oyster Pioneer.

In Canada, the model names include Centregraph, Raleigh, Victory, Lipton, Pioneer and many were marketed to WWII soldiers in Canada and other Commonwealth countries. The cases tended to be either steel or gold filled. This 1940s watch is made by ROLEX for the Canadian market only and these watches were sold at PX military stores in WW2 to soldiers going overseas. The smaller case size made them less like to be damaged during battle. It uses the caliber 59 ROLEX.

I remebered dring the late 1980s, I used to own the Canadian Oyster but has sold it along the way. I am glad to be able to find one and trade one back after 20 years... Bring back fond memories.. These watches are becoming scare nowadays, especially for those in good conditions.

Watch that was never launched
